"Kirk is the unpredictable daredevil with the logical Vulcan sidekick."
Hahaha! Nah. That’s backwards.
Kirk may be a tactical genius, but he’s also a major nerd who collects antique books and is a chess Grandmaster. He was so focused on excelling academically at the Academy he was called a stack of book with legs. Kirk is the steadfastly moral, kind, bleeding heart who wears his heart on his sleeve. He’s compassionate to a fault. He may throw himself headfirst into the fray, but only because he’d rather sacrifice himself than others, and has the faith that Spock will always rescue him, and Bones will be there to piece him back together.
On the other hand, Spock is a REBEL of the highest order. He’s a thrill seeking adrenaline junkie, who dives head first into danger.
People hear Spock say that he is too “emotional” for Vulcans, and think it’s just because he gets into fights defending his and his mother’s humanity. Maybe he’s considered too emotional because he cries, or struggles to hide that he’s overly sensitive, or that he lashes out at bullies instead of suppressing his reactions, but really, that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Spock craves adventure and exploration. He may look like the model buttoned up Vulcan to the nakedly emotional humans, but to Vulcans he’s the kid who undertook the kahs-wan at 7, three years early. He’s the kid who questions everything around him. He’s a scientist who craves discovery, to be the first to prove the unprovable.
He responds to slander against his mother with violence, and defied his father’s wishes and broke generations of family tradition by saying a giant “Fuck You” to the VSA and refused admittance when they insulted his and his mother’s humanity, and left Vulcan for Earth and humans without looking back.
He may be the great grandson of Solkar, and the heir to the clan of Surak, but the other Vulcans see him as the human son of the illogical Ambassador who defied logic and Vulcan precepts to marry an even more illogical human. They see him as the first Vulcan to officially join a human led, militaristic armada that explores the deep recesses of space, deliberately putting himself in situations that force him to respond with violence and emotion.
Spock isn’t the calm, collected, logical exterior he projects. Spock is a BAMF, and don’t you forget it.

makes me a little sad when star trek ignores IDIC. like. vulcans are logical. that is true. But 'logical', for vulcans, does not amount to 'without compassion,' and it definitely doesn't amount to 'racial superiority.' Belief in 'infinite diversity in infinite combinations' should NOT result in the weird racist/speciest stuff we're getting in some of the newer treks. It does make sense that some vulcans are discriminatory. They're still flawed. But that should not be common or expected, like it seems to be in SNW. If it is, then it's a race of hypocrites, which. doesn't seem very true to Star Trek's message.
I think TOS Spock does a pretty good job of embodying this. Not always, it was the 60s, after all, but mostly. He was often trying to find non-violent routes, and get by without killing - even if they were in danger or had already been attacked. (See: the mugato, and the horta (until Kirk was the one in danger, lmao. t'hy'la > IDIC), the Gorn ship). Kirk, in his eulogy, calls him the most human soul he's ever known, and I've always read that as Kirk calling out Spock's overwhelming compassion.
It's just so much more interesting when Vulcans get to be radically compassionate. I want them to believe that everything and everyone has value. I want them to respect all ways of being. I want them to find ways for even very non-humanoid aliens to exist unfettered in society. I want them to see hybrids and think that it's amazing. Also, like, disability rep. I want Vulcans to have The Most Accessible Planet and available resources because they want everyone to feel accepted and valued. It makes for better characters and more interesting stories.
#tbh feels like some weird racist/misogynistic enlightenment-era philosophy coming through when they do that. y'know?#like 'oooh if you're fully logical you're BETTER than those who have EMOTIONS like WOMEN do'.#and the paramount execs are eating it up like 'yesss logic means being an ASS to people LESS LOGICAL than you!'.#like really guys. c'mon#like it makes sense in TAS that spock would get bullied by some kids. kids bully. that's common. makes sense that even vulcan kids bully#but if ADULTS are OFTEN doubting spock because he's half-human? that just kinda sucks. if i may it's even illogical#IDIC for me but not for thee type thing.#i think that being discriminatory should be a source of shame on a vulcan's house.#i think vulcans should adore learning about other cultures#star trek#vulcan#star trek vulcan#vulcans#vulcan culture#spock#star trek tos#tos#star trek the original series#sorry for my lack of mention of other major vulcan characters. I am so so behind in my star trek watching.#from what i've heard tuvok is also a good example. i know next to nothing about t'pol so couldn't say for her.

Finally finished this!!!
turns out Bones is really hard to paint/draw and Spock low-key looks more like Sarek but I'm actually very pleased with how it turned out!
This is based on “the creation of Adam” which I believe was originally painted by Michelangelo but please correct me if I'm wrong!

you could add i'chaya, maybe? or a chess piece
Okay! Thank you all for helping me with this! Many ppl suggested I-Chaya which I hadn’t even thought of him! More great suggestions were the IDIC symbol, chess pieces, his lyre/vulcan weapons, illogical, and “very bad poetry Captain”.
(I also wanted to add constellations, and I found a horoscope for Spock, which claims he’s a Virgo with a Gemini moon, and an Aries rising. Idk how accurate this is, but I added them anyway.)
I really like the tribble I added, because we all know full well if Spock had less self control he’d have a small herd of them hidden in his quarters…

Blaming @musicfeedsmysoul12 and the “humans are space orcs” post for this taking over my brain with a vengeance but I would kill for a 500 episode series of Sarek and Amanda’s relationship from the beginning because seeing a Vulcan coming to terms with all the illogical that is humanity would be so fucking funny.
This man would make it through her first period and look like he just escaped an active war zone. She has pack bonded with their vacuum cleaner that she put plastic eyes on and cried when it broke. She got wine drunk and drew eyebrows on their Shelat with an eyebrow pencil and is scream laughing on the floor. She told him to “shut up his eyebrows” during an argument. Despite the fact that he is three times as strong as the average human male and would have gladly helped her she decided to rearrange their living room while he was at work. When they’re on earth there is one (1) pigeon she has beef with that made its nest near the Vulcan embassy she can pick it out without fail every time. She has asked him which of two identical shades of pink lipstick looks better and got mad when he told her they were the same. A human man twice her size made a rude comment about Sarek when they were out in public and she lectured that man until he cried.
And all of this culminates as him explaining humans to little Spock who is solemnly nodding along with his every word like it’s gospel.
#the elf talks#Star Trek#I just need this very serious Vulcan falling head over heels for a woman that is just so human okay like I love her so much#let her be human with all of the quirks and illogical behavior#that’s why he loves her#Sarek writing what is essentially a ‘human translation guide’ for other Vulcans to learn from his mistakes#this all started because I thought about Sarek trying to logic a period and snowballed from there

Thinking about how Spock's first instinct when he has a friend is to risk his life for them because his first friend (I-Chaya) risked her life to save him.
#spock#caspian rambles#star trek tos#also how his father likely told him “that was her purpose as your friend” (using friend as a way to relate to his sons humanity)#and 7 year old Spock taking that to mean “friends are the ones you risk your life for” rather than “I-Chaya was bred to be a guard sehlat”#and his dad following that up with “thats the Vulcan Way” when Spock asks why his mom is crying (bc yknow she loved I-Chaya more than Sarek)#so he. at 7 years old. decides “My Purpose In Life Is To Die For My Friends Therefore It Is Illogical To Wish For Anything Else”#I am Very Unwell About Spock#Spock my beloved

Do you have a number in mind? [Patreon | Commissions]
#Tuvok#bee doodles#comix page#my writing#Father who may not see or speak to his children for 70 years#Husband who may not see or speak to his wife for 70 years#Devotion in Absolutes <3#Was thinking about how Vulcans tend to be able to calculate percentages very quickly and off the cuff#Like 'There is an approximately 34.4% chance of us surviving' based on [hand wave] things which my Human mind cannot weigh#Thinking about how Tom said there's a good chance Tuvok will never see his wife again#Do you think Tuvok ever runs the numbers?? Jonathan Archer may not be the best captain. He may not be the smartest captain. He may not be the coolest captain. But he is certainly the captain who’s name is an insult in the most cultures and you can’t take that away from him
#and it has different meanings for each one! for instance a klingon calling someone an archer would be saying you’re dishonorable and I want#you to die while a vulcan saying it would mean you’re supremely illogical while a human saying it means you’re a war criminal. it’s only a#compliment on andoria where it means you’re a totally cool and handsome guy#ent#jonathan archer

8, 11, 16, 19, for the trek asks? 💖
<3333 heyyy!!!!
8. are you a nepo baby? (has trekkie parents/uncles/siblings)
no i am not actually! my family doesn't know anything about it really, i started watching it on a whim! :)
11. do you have any songs that you associate with star trek characters?
yes !!! @trillscienceofficer introduced me to the beths and chappell roan for b'elanna and i think about her every time i listen to them. i also really like son of a preacher man for tuvok/t'pel...
there's a filipino folk song called katakataka (i listen to the eva eugenio version) that reminds me of sirella nd martok. i tend to think of worf a lot when i listen to old country songs... big bad john by jimmy dean im thinking of specifically cause of the lyrics but also just like the steeldrivers and other country artists have this earnest vibe that i think fit him. :) hank williams singing about the country... old soul worf vibes
andd also corny but oh no! by marina... and brutal by olivia rodrigo are very b'elanna and seven songs to me
16. your favourite ship?
i forgot to mention in the first ask but actually i'm a big fan of k'ehleyr and worf they had a lot of tension (the good and bad kind) that i found sooo compelling fr... the shared history... the arguments... the yearning.... the loud silence!!!!! oughhh. just the- worf wanting to be with someone who understands his background in the way she can, who doesn't see him as lesser for being in starfleet, but then also holding her up to the same standards other people hold him up to- we have to do this the perfect klingon way or this is wrong etc.
and k'ehleyr trying to discern after they sleep together whether he wants her or wants to be understood or wants do the honorable thing and marry her despite what he might feel... but then also not really feeling totally okay with herself and her identity, and what being with worf, who embraces that stuff to a fault, would mean for herself and eventually for alexander. i thought that the dynamic was so engaging and i liked seeing what a relationship looked like outside of (? but not totally) human convention the blood on the palm scene? slayyeddd
19. share a headcanon!
hmmm i think vulcans think it's polite to look away when someone (vulcan, this might be impractical with other races) is displaying an emotion really overtly! crying or laughing maybe... i think if someone was going into pon farr and getting mad i'd try to leave or at least look away, it must be uncomfortable to see on display like that!
#diary#vulcan voice discomfort is illogical#but doesnt it seem like they would be awkward about it? lol

Human, picking up and petting a small cat
Human: Wow! Look at the kitten! It’s so adorable!
Vulcan: Yes, she is my new companion. She is most pleasant in appearance.
Human: She’s so soft! I could pet her all day!
Vulcan: While an illogical sentiment, I do agree. Her fur is most pleasing to touch.
Human: She’s SO CUTE! I could just EAT HER!
Vulcan: *horrified*
Human: I mean… ha. Wow. Um… I guess Vulcans don’t have dimorphous expressions? It’s, um, it’s called “cute aggression.”
Vulcan, still horrified: Illogical. Please remove your hands from the kitten.

my FAVORITE all time inane AU formula is "help something happened to santa and SOS somehow the cast of _____ has to deliver all the presents to the entire world/universe in one night"
and so now im picturing the SNW enterprise crew doing so w/kirk and Santa as some ubiquitous benevolent good tidings space entity
#santa isnt a coca cola capitalist in this au w are talking about yuletide winter spirit here#strange new worlds#christopher pike#defactor head elf: Una Chin Riley#lmao im picturing la'an like CAPTAIN there's a rottweiler in home 236#uhura is like CAPTAIN LETTERS TO SANTA ARE ARRIVING AT AN ALARMING PACE#spock is like 'quantifying persons into a dichotomous list of Naughty or Nice is illogically oversimplified - and by which metrics am I#checking such list Twice?'#and then he continues to have his Vulcan/Human personality conflict (sorry spock) but the real elves love him#christine and erica and joseph are getting smashed on Good Cheer#sam and jim and working together as Chris' on-ground backup and sams like JIM YOU CANT PUT THE PRESENT THERE UNDER CARDASSIAN CUSTOM ITS#CONSIDERED AN INSULT TO PLACE A GIFT BY A FIREPLACE#and jims on the comm like: Sam I'm Stuck In The Chimney - over

star trek snw s2e?? thoughts on vulcans and very hot teapots.
So, like, I recently started watching the 2nd season of star trek snw (I needed a break after they killed Hemmar)
anyways, I refuse to believe that vulcans expect humans to needlessly burn themselves handeling vulcan teapots without any protection. Like thats just stupid.
Amanda needlessly tortures herself to fit in.
#Also vulcans can lie#star trek snw#star trek#vulcans#vulcans and humans#vulcan culture#star trek thoughts#amanda greyson#Star trek snw season 2#Vulcan probably think it more illogical#to handle burning hot tea pots without protecting your hands.#Vulcans usually are aware of all their superiorities

You know those like letter exchange programs and sister school things? One of those between Earth and Vulcan so Kirk and Spock are childhood penpals and it includes Spock getting increasingly concerned by what Jim isn’t saying as much as what he is saying, Amanda who thinks their friendship is the cutest thing she’s ever heard of, and Jim who eventually tries to run away to Vulcan and makes it to the Embassy before someone calls Sarek and poor Sarek has to figure out how to collect a child that isn’t his on another planet without causing a diplomatic incident or getting him sent back to an abusive home.
#the elf talks#Star Trek#sarek is the real mvp and is trying his damn best okay#Jim has definitely bit at least two people before the Vulcan embassy got ahold of him#Sarek: how did you get there? you are ten.#Jim: well Spock sent me an emergency card and I used that to buy a ticket#Sarek: I was expecting something far more illog-#Jim: also I stole Frank’s car and drove it off a cliff :D#Sarek: … … …#Sarek: Do not speak to anyone before i call a lawyer
